Leaving his one-dimensional representations in pop culture aside, Raavan is a fascinating figure in Hinduism. On the one side, he is a devoted worshiper of Lord Shiva, a benevolent king of Lanka and one of the greatest warriors of Hinduism, and on the other side, he is the epitome of pride, lust and arrogance. Raavan is said to have had ten heads, each denoting his multiple personalities.
The story of Raavan is relatable to me. Born a third-culture kid, I contend with multiple identities. These identities were ascribed to me based on birth, immigration, religion, caste and language. In this sculpture, The Human Canvas #2: Raavan, I unravel the many identities that define me in very significant ways and meditate upon how they continue to shape me.
