Sati, a gruesome practice stemming from a story of love and the angst of separation to propagate “honour” and instill patriarchy. One aspect of this act and a recurring theme throughout propagating patriarchy in Hinduism is reducing women to objects of honour and sacrifice. This minimalist abstract painting draws its elements from this gruesome act. The pale white colour and the act of burning itself are elements that directly refer to the practice of Sati. While this painting looks abstract, it stands as an object of representation because at the end of this gruesome act, what remains is the residue of burnt cloth and ash.
