The League of Nations is a Mark Rothko-inspired take on the Cold War. The Cold War is one of the most tumultuous times in human history, whose aftermath is still felt today in many parts of the world. The League of Nations, a nod to the nations involved in this conflict, their policies and wars. This painting borrows its visual language from Abstract Expressionism, specifically Mark Rothko’s colour-field paintings— the pinnacle of Abstract Expressionism. The post-World War II movement, so important to the time it belonged to—a step towards pure abstraction and response to Stalin’s Socialist Realism. The League of Nations reintroduces the society that surrounded the abstract expressionist movement. It deals with everything left out by the Abstract Expressionist narrative through the visuality endorsed by the movement.
